varios kilómetros hacia el sur; 2) los paleovalles elongados sur-norte;
[ABSTRACT]
The Plioccne II . Quaternary 1 sediments of the Granada Basin
(Fig. 1) eonsist of alluvial and fluviolacustrine deposits, and their distribution
is controlled by geodinamics along the borders of the basin,
the source areas and the place that they occupy into the basin. The
so-called Moraleda de Zafayona conglomerates were laid down by the
paleo-Cacín river, the deposits of whieh were much more widely
spread than those of the paleo-Genil river. The present-day situation
is the rcverse:
The assumed fluvial model consists of an alluvial valley elongated
south-north, that bends towards the west near the village of Moraleda
de Zafayona (Fig. 2). Flood plain and channcl fill deposits are found
into the valley. The prominent tendeney of the channel deposits to
pile up along the same vertical plane suggests a tectonically-controlled
drainage pattern.
According to the position of the ground water level as related to
the ground of the flood plain, two facies associations have been
distinguished: a} subaerial fload plain, including reddish fine sediments
and pedogenic carbonate nodules and b) greyish backswamp
deposits. The latter is best represented in the northern area were the
subsidence was more pranauneed, but it expanded towards the south
with time (Fig. 3).
Channel-fill facies correspond to pebbly braided streams having a
broad and complex river bed. There were active and temporary-inactive
(these assumed to lay at higher levels) courses that moved across
with time generating multistorey conglomerate layers with a complex
fining-upwards sequence made up of Gms → Gm/Sh → Gt → St → Fl (P)
(Fig. 4).
Bars forming inside the channels share a common sedimentary
evolution that ineludes suceessive episodes of deposition and erosion
as well as sequences of various scales due to the fluctuations of the
river discharge (Figs. 5, 6, 7). There is an initial stage of high energy
related to high discharge, where the core of the bar is laid down.
High-energy conditions are also recorded in the part of the sequence
that forms during the progressive vertical growth, as the bar increasingly
interferes with the flow and the generalized sweeping of the
sediment resting on the surface of the bar causes the formation of
pavements and reactivation surfaces. After the bar reaches a certain
height (as compared to the continously-changing water level) it severely interferes the flow and the water depth over the top of the bar
becomes very low and deposition of fine sediments occurs. The upper
part of the internal structure of the bars shows a fining upwards trend
with common rootling. The preservation of the upper parts of the
sequences remains problematic because they are the first that will
be removed if eros ion by migrating channels occurs (Fig. 8).
The fluvial architecture and facies distribution change along with
the proximality or distality of the system (Fig. 9). In proximal areas
the river was confined to an alluvial valley, there were more or less
straight channels, with no recognizable levees, under low-energy conditions,
that formed very flat bars with riffle-type fronts. Vegetated
flood plain with well-developed vadose zones, minar ephemeral channeis
and sheet flood sandy or gravelly layers extended up to the
borders of the valley.
In more distal arcas, where the alluvium was only partially confined,
the channels adquire a more sinuous tendency with braided
bars. The g

[ABSTRACT]
The alluvial materials outcropping in the surroundings of Moraleda constitute an excellent
example of a conglomeratic fluviatile system, of proximal braided type, with a wide
flood plain.
Rivers were coming from the southern Betic reliefs. When the trending of theif channels
can be reconstructed they show a NW orientation till they reach the Moraleda point,
turning towards the west at tbis point. This is due to the existence of Triassic outcrops,
placed to the north of the above mentioned village, wich constituted positive reliefs and
were tectonically active during sedimentation. .
Two types of facies associations have been differentiated in the flood plain deposits
according to the position occupied by the ground water level during sedimentation: a) a
subaerial fload plain in which soil processes developed widely and that is best represented
to the south and in the lower part of the sequence, and b)subaqueous flood plain (backswamp)
better developed to the north and in the upper part of the sequences and affected
by hydromospmsmo processes.
The proposed model consists of a wide and complex river bed in which an inactive
course at higher levels than an active one and a wide flood plain can be differentiated. The
river bed remain for a long time in the same position, filling and changing frequently the
position of the active course with respect to the inactive oue. The position of the river
bed inside the flood plain changed only a faw times. As a consequence of this mechanism
an upward energy-decreasing sequence is developed: Gms-Gm/Sh-Gt-St-Fl, wich repeat for
severa1 times during the filling-channel stage, till its final abandon and the appearance of
the flood plain facies.

In the North of the Province of Granada, eocenie materials outcrop under two different facies, vhich are named
as two Formations: -limestone facies (Cañada Hermosa Formation) and, southwards, marly and lutitic facies with some
detritic limestone interbedded (Nablanca Formation). There exists a lithofacies change from North (1imestone facies)
towarss South (marly facies) and, at the same time, the thickness notably increases.
In this paper, we shall study composition, texture, fossi1s and primary sedimentary interpretation of Nablanca
Formation.
We consider that the most suirtab1e would be a marine open shelf environment with a marked continental influence,
due to a fluviomarine deltaic environment (prodelta).
To conclude, we propose several hypothesis to explain the palaeogeographic distribution of the area.

The so-called Neurath Sands in the main marine wedge in the miocenic coal layers of Browncoal District. According to the types and sequences of sedimentary structures several facies are defined and interpreted in this sandy body. So, we conclude they originated in coastal environments including nearshore, shore and lagoon which related each other. Shoreline moved to and from during hte sedimentary evolution.
Resumen: Neogenic detrital materials around Purchena show three interbedded laycers of reef deposits which have been studied from four stratigraphic sections.
The lower layer, 5 m. thick, shows biogenic structures as well as detrituos derived from them. Corals and algae build up reef skeletons by the growing of young colonies on the old ones. Lagoonal sediments have also been recognized and
they
are build of micritic limestones with Alveolinidae, Miliolidae, Pelecipods and algae. The middle layer comprises two units: the lower one set up by coral gravels which venishes out in a northern and northwerterly direction. The upper one is similar to the former. Fossils in a living position are more frequent especially at the top of the reef sections. Lagoonal limestones are also very well represented.
The upper bioclastic layer is a conglomerate with very abundant algae. The growth of the reef system was conditioned by the detrital sedimentary influence and the reef deposits laterally intertongue with detrital ones. Growing started when the corals and algae had a solid substratum provided by algal detritus or pelecipod shells mecanically accumulated. Then, massive forms are developed which are broken in several ways, especially by organisms and wave action. Detrital sediments finally buried the reefs and there were no further recurrencies of them during the Tierras Blancas Formation sedimentation.
The study of neighboring areas leads us to think of an intermediate reef complex between the fringing and barries ones, located in a region under strong detrital sedimentary influence, where reefs grew especially as patch reefs. The prevalent warm climate conditions originated evaporite deposits, some time before the formation of the middle layer.
ligadas a descargas elevadas.
[ABSTRACT]
Proximal braided alluvial systems with very stable channels flowed through a well-developed
flaod plain in the area of Moraleda de Zafayona during Plio-Pleistocene times. There were active
and non-active zones within the maio braided channel with continuously changing relative posiliaos.
Two bars of the alluvial system are studied in this paper.
Bar n. o 1 rorrned into a small, confined channel rrom a lag that grew vertically and that eventually
developed a slip face (foreset). The bar grew also by lateral accretion of successive sedimentary
wedges that recorded the Iluctuations of flow and a generalized lateral and vertical decrease
of the energy of the flow as changes of graio size and sequences of primary sedimentary structures.
The remaining residual channel (slough channel?) was filled with coarsening-upwards gravels
due to the increasing flow energy simultaneous to the decreasing size of the channel. Upper flow
regime conditions induced by de shallow water depth occurred at the top of the newly-formed bar.
Bar n. o 2 was a free bar in the channel. A bar core and several stages of growth with vellpreserved
morphologies can be recognized. Fluctuations of discharge were recorded as sequences
of grain sizes and types of sedimentary structures contained in the various stages and as reactivatia
n surfaces. An axial depressión dag down into the bar top and a scour channel marginal to
(he bar, both of them filled with gravel, were found too.
The internal structure of the bars shows a similar vertical evolution in all the cases, characterized
by and initial stage of high energy related to high discharge and deposition of the core of
the bar. High-energy conditions are also recorded in part of sequence formed during the progressive
vertical growlh, as the bar increasingly interferes with the flow and generalized sweeping of
sediment takes place resulting in the formation of pavements and reactivation surfaces. After the
bar reaches a critical heigth (as compared to the continuously-channing water level) it severely
interferes the flow, water depth over the top of the bar is very low and deposition of finer grain
sizes occurs. The upper part of the internal structure of the bars shows a fining-upwards trend
with common rootling. The preservation of the upper parts of the sequences ramains problematic
beca use they are the first that will be removed if eros ion by migrating channels occurs.
Resumen: Spain is the most self-sufficient country for minerals in the
EsU. A major proportion of these Spanish mineral resources has
been oblained from Tertiary material-. The main material
exploited in Tertiary basins have been: brown coal and lignites, potassium salts, sodium salts (sulphates and chlorides), diátomite,
sepiolite and other absorbent days, bentonites, celestine. pumíce and also dimension (building)
stones and ceramícs, portland
cement and plaster raw materials.
Pb-Zn-Ag and gold alunite volcanogenic ores, related to Neogene
volcanism, besides Au-placers have been mined from Roman
times, Minor Cu and Mn occurrences are also reviewed.
The brown coal mines of Galician basins have provided all the
sígnificant productíon of Spain: more than 17 Mt. Low-quaility
Oligocene lignites in the eastern part of the Ebro Basin and Balearic
Islands are less important from tbe economic point of view. Other
occurrences are in the Guinzo de Limia. Guadix Baza. Granada
(Arenas del Rey) and Alcoy basins.
The Spanish Tertiary basins (continental and marine, (Oligocene-Miocene) are filled by thick evaporites in which are obtained
potassium salts and sodium salts (sulphates and chlorides). The
Montevives celestine mine is located in the evaporitic unit of the
Granada basin (Miocene), and provides all of the Spanish celestine
production. Spain is the world's third largest producer of celestine.
The Madríd basin and the minor Calatayud basín supply the
whole of Spanish sepiolitic production. The most important Spanish
attapulgite production is obtained from the El Cuervo mine (Sevilla
and Cádiz provinces). The genesis of the Cabo de Gata bentonite
deposits is thought to be by hydrothermal alteration and halmyrolsis
of Neogene volcanic roch. The Madrid basin bentonites and
'pink days' have been interpreted as an early diagenetic. even
edaphic Mg-rich, attapulgitization of illite clays. The most important
areas of ceramic c1ay production in Spain are localed in the
Guadalquivir basin (Bailen area) and the Madrid basin, (La Sagra
Alcalá de Henares).
The continental Neogene basin ofthe Hellin area supplies 90 % of Spanish diamote production.
[ABSTRACT]
Well-developed Messinian coral reef deposits outcrop in the neogene hasins of Almería (Southeastem Spain). The study of some of the best known reefs leads to the establishement of their main stratigraphic features and of their paleogeographic meaning.
Reefs grew on shelf marginal areas while, at the same time, marly sedimentation was taking place on adjacent deeper basins. Because of that, completely different stratigraphic sections accumulated in each place.
Several sedimentary facies related to reef subenvironments can be distinguished. Reef framework facies is built up by Porytes. Vertical tube-like colonies, up to several meters high, were cemented early in the submarine environment and became highly resistant to erosion. Fore-reef facies (reef talus facies) dipping originally 10-25° are mainly composed by calcirudites and calcarenites showing changes in the type
of skeletal constituents as we move toward the basin. Distal talus/basin transition facies consist of laminated calcilutites.
The paleogeographical reconstruction shows an archipielago with scattered islands most of them corresponding to the present sierras which, at that time, were partly emerged. The reefs developed as fringes which prograded basinward from the islands. Thus radial pattems of talus originated.
Later on broad shallow carbonate platforns, without reefs, developed on these reliefs, in the Southeastem outcrops the sediments tipically consisting of oolites and some interlayered stromatolite beds.
Reef deposits were laler dolomitized during diagenesis. Intragranular porosity due to dissolution of primary aragonitic skeletal remains (and possibly accompanying dolomitation) is very high. That is why they are thought to be good potential oil reservoir.
Major features of Messinian reefs have been finally outlined and compared with those who present the reefs of Tortonian age occurring in the same area.
